Alona Decade was born into a musically inclined family where music ingrained itself as the driving force that ignited her soul. Singing has been her outlet to express the disparities of life. Deep down, she always knew that one day it would help tell her story.

As a child, she wrote poems and jingles to express her frustration with feeling misunderstood, insecure about her dark skin, and unloved. It was lonely, but Alona found solace with her 2003 HP Pavilion desktop voice recorder, a stack of loose-leaf paper (meant for school but never made it), and a pile of gel pens. Intentional or not, Alona marked herself for what she would become. Her amateur writing and singing sessions as a child liberated her. It may have taken a couple of decades, a heap of journals, and a lot of therapy, but 2019 was the beginning of her breakthrough.

Her first change was to lock her hair, a change that others had discouraged her from doing since the age of 10. With newfound courage, she embraced this long-awaited act of self-expression, feeling empowered and liberated in the process. Her second move was to invest in equipment and build a DIY recording studio in her 1,200-square-foot apartment. She was determined to show the world that you don’t need a big budget to make big dreams come true. 

Then, in 2020, she lost her job due to Covid-19, giving her time to be honest about her dreams. Just like when she was a little girl, pen and paper helped her express her limited beliefs and pain. She began writing what would become her debut album, Indecisive. From there, she never looked back.

Like T.F. Hodge, a motivational speaker wrote: “Making a dream into reality begins with what you have, not with what you are waiting on.” Alona’s not waiting on fame or clout to make her dreams a reality. She uses the studio as her sanctuary and her lyrics as her testimony. Every song she writes is a piece of her evolution and is meant to inspire everyone toward conscious self-mastery, liberation, and love.
